We visited just before the 4th of July and we hiked up from the base to the lodge. The hike was nice. Not too long (about 4 miles) but it was a lot of switchbacks. We had lunch up at the top. The burger was excellent and so were the views. The only downsides were they only had one beer on tap and the lift ticket back down was $25 a person.

The lodge is a great place to warm up, use restroom, etc during skiing without having to go all the way down the mountain to the base!

Our Flatland Ski Association provides a baked potato and chili welcome meal. At Steamboat it's the top of the gondola, which is where Thunderhead Lodge is. It's a tradition, but the food is always unimpressive. Free beer provided for us by Boulevard.
